The World Map Is Changing—But the Bigger Story Is How Maps Shape What We See

For generations, millions of people have looked at the same familiar world map and assumed it showed the planet as it really is.

Then came a simple question: What if the map itself is giving us the wrong impression of the world’s size?

That question is now at the center of a new United Nations-backed push to change how the world is represented on maps.

On September 4, 2026, the UN General Assembly endorsed a resolution encouraging the wider use of the Equal Earth projection, an alternative designed to represent the relative areas of continents more accurately than the widely used Mercator projection. The resolution passed with 164 countries in favor, while the United States voted against and six countries abstained, according to the Associated Press.

The decision does not mean the old world map has suddenly become illegal or unusable.

Instead, it opens a larger conversation about something most people rarely think about: every flat map makes choices about what to preserve and what to distort.

Why Does the World Need a New Map?

The basic problem is geometry.

Earth is roughly spherical, while a traditional wall map is flat. Imagine trying to peel an orange and press the entire skin onto a sheet of paper without stretching, tearing or folding it.

You cannot do it perfectly.

Cartographers have therefore developed different map projections, each designed to preserve particular characteristics.

The Mercator projection, created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, became especially important because it preserved directions in a way that made it highly useful for maritime navigation.

But there was a trade-off.

Areas become increasingly exaggerated as they move toward the poles. Countries and continents in northern and southern high latitudes can appear much larger than their actual land area.

Greenland and Africa Reveal the Problem

One of the easiest ways to understand the issue is to compare Greenland and Africa.

On many Mercator-style maps, Greenland looks surprisingly close in size to Africa.

In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland.

That difference is not a mistake in the underlying geography. It is a consequence of the projection used to turn a globe into a rectangle.

The Equal Earth projection takes a different approach. It is an equal-area projection, meaning the relative sizes of land areas are preserved much more accurately.

Suddenly, Africa looks much closer to the size it actually occupies on Earth.

Equal Earth Does Not Mean a Perfect Map

There is an important detail that can easily get lost in the excitement surrounding the UN decision.

Equal Earth is not a magic map that eliminates every distortion.

No flat map can perfectly reproduce a spherical planet.

Instead, Equal Earth makes a different trade-off. It prioritizes area accuracy, allowing the relative sizes of continents and regions to be compared more faithfully.

The shapes of some landmasses are consequently altered.

This is a crucial point because the debate is sometimes presented as though one map is “true” and another is simply “false.”

The reality is more complicated.

A map projection is a tool. The right tool depends partly on what you are trying to show.

Mercator Still Has a Purpose

The UN-backed shift should therefore not be interpreted as the complete disappearance of Mercator.

Mercator was originally developed for navigation, where maintaining angles and directions was extremely useful.

That purpose has not suddenly disappeared.

A projection that is useful for navigation does not necessarily have to be the best projection for teaching children how large continents are.

This distinction is one reason cartographers have long used different projections for different tasks.

The new UN initiative is primarily about encouraging more appropriate representations for educational, informational and general world maps.

What the UN Resolution Actually Does

The phrase “the UN has changed the world map” makes for a dramatic headline, but it needs some qualification.

The General Assembly resolution encourages member states and other users to move away from maps that substantially distort the relative sizes of continents and to consider alternatives such as Equal Earth.

It does not impose a worldwide legal ban on Mercator.

The Associated Press reported that the resolution encourages adoption in areas including education, media and digital platforms.

That means the change is more about standards, awareness and representation than replacing every map overnight.

Why Africa Is at the Center of the Debate

Africa has become the clearest symbol of the problem.

On a conventional Mercator world map, the continent can look smaller than its enormous real-world footprint suggests.

That matters because maps are often people’s first introduction to geography.

Students may grow up repeatedly seeing certain regions appear disproportionately large while others appear smaller.

Supporters of the UN initiative argue that more accurate area representation can help correct those misconceptions.

The campaign behind the resolution was strongly supported by African countries and the African Union, with Togo playing a leading role in bringing the issue to the UN.

Is This Only About Geography?

This is where the story becomes more interesting.

A map does not merely provide coordinates.

Maps influence how people visualize the world.

For decades, the Mercator projection has been printed in classrooms, displayed on walls and reproduced in books and digital graphics. Because it is so familiar, many people rarely stop to consider what its distortions mean.

Supporters of the new approach argue that changing the visual representation can encourage a more geographically accurate understanding of the world.

Critics, however, have questioned how much practical difference a projection change will make, particularly when digital mapping systems already use different projections depending on the purpose. Recent reporting has also highlighted disagreements over whether the UN initiative is primarily technical or carries a broader political message.

Those disagreements are part of the story, but they do not change the underlying mathematical issue: flattening a globe inevitably involves distortion.

India and Other Countries Face a Different Map Debate

The significance of the change also varies depending on where a country sits on the globe.

Regions close to the equator experience far less dramatic size distortion under Mercator than areas near the poles.

For countries in Africa and other equatorial or tropical regions, however, the difference between apparent and actual area can be especially noticeable.

The debate therefore goes beyond simply asking which map “looks better.”

It raises a more practical question:

What information should a world map preserve?

Should it prioritize direction?

Should it prioritize area?

Should it preserve recognizable shapes?

Or should it try to balance several competing goals?

Different projections provide different answers.

Australia Will Look Different Too

The discussion is not only about Africa.

Australia and other southern-hemisphere countries can also appear relatively smaller on Mercator maps than they would on an equal-area representation.

Under Equal Earth, landmasses are presented according to their relative surface area, producing a noticeably different visual balance between northern and southern parts of the world.

For viewers accustomed to the old projection, the first reaction may simply be that the new map “looks strange.”

That is partly because familiarity has a powerful effect on our perception.

A map that looks normal to us is not necessarily the map that represents geography most accurately for every purpose.

Why the United States Opposed the Resolution

The vote also revealed a political divide over the initiative.

The United States was the only country to vote against the resolution, while 164 countries supported it and six abstained, according to AP reporting.

The disagreement illustrates that the issue is not purely technical.

Supporters see the initiative as a way to improve geographic representation and challenge longstanding distortions.

Opponents have questioned whether changing map conventions should be treated as an international priority and have raised concerns about the broader motivations behind the campaign.

Those competing interpretations are worth separating from the underlying cartographic facts.

The Bigger Lesson: Every Map Tells a Different Story

Perhaps the most important takeaway is not that one map has suddenly become correct.

It is that there is no single perfect way to flatten Earth.

A navigation chart, a classroom map, a population map and a climate map may all need different projections.

Think of it like taking a photograph.

A wide-angle lens captures an enormous scene but changes the appearance of objects near the edges. A zoom lens captures detail but loses the broader picture.

Neither lens is automatically “wrong.”

The same principle applies to map projections.

What Will Change in Everyday Life?

For most people, the answer is probably: not much immediately.

Google Maps and other navigation systems will not suddenly transform into Equal Earth maps for everyday street navigation.

Road maps, aviation charts and specialist geographic systems have their own technical requirements.

The more noticeable changes are likely to appear in classrooms, publications, infographics, educational material and other general-purpose maps if organizations follow the UN’s recommendation.

The UN itself continues to maintain a broad collection of maps and geospatial products, using mapping approaches suited to different purposes.

A New Map, but an Older Question

The controversy surrounding the Equal Earth projection may look like a debate about a picture.

It is actually a debate about information.

What should people see when they look at the world?

For centuries, cartographers have known that turning a globe into a flat sheet requires compromises. The Mercator projection solved one important problem—navigation—but created another by dramatically exaggerating areas toward the poles.

Equal Earth makes a different choice by putting greater emphasis on preserving relative land area.

The UN’s latest resolution does not erase the old map. It simply encourages the world to think more carefully about which map it uses and why.

And perhaps that is the most valuable lesson of all.

The next time you look at a world map, don’t just ask “Where is this country?”

Ask another question, too:

“What did the mapmaker choose to show accurately—and what had to be distorted to make the world fit on this page?”
